Tur Hunts

Tur Hunt Information

There are three species of Tur in the world; Eastern or Dagestan Tur, Mid Caucasian Tur and Western or Kuban Tur. Tur are considered both sheep and goat for GSCO recording purposes. We won't debate what they should be called but we know these are special animals and they are worthy of a separate Hunt Page here. Dagestan's have sheepy horns, resembling Blue Sheep or Aoudad. Kuban's have more ibex type horns and the Mid's are somewhere in between the other two. All three species act and move both like goats and sheep, they are very intriguing.

Where & When To Hunt

Tur are isolated to the Caucasus Mountains ranging along the Russian/Georgian border and terminating in Azerbaijan. The Eastern's are hunting almost solely in Azerbaijan. The Western and Mid Tur are hunted on the Russian side of the range. There is no foreign hunting in Georgia at this time. Elevation for all range from 8,000 to 13,000 feet with Mt Elbrus being the highest peak at 18,510 feet. Seasons typically run from June to November across the board. All access to Azerbaijan is through Baku. The vast majority of Russian hunts begin and end in MinVody via Moscow.

What To Expect

It's often said that tur hunting is the most physically demanding mountain hunt in the world. We can attest that the Caucasus Mtns are some of the steepest we've ever experienced and they certainly won't grant access to the unwilling. These mountains are filled with vertical rock, steep grass slopes, glacier-ed rock slides and tur. This is a typical Asian type hunt, you won't have to carry alot of your own gear. That said you'll want to be at your best for this hunt. These mountains tend to make their own weather when and how they desire, proper gear as always is the recipe for success. Steep shots are the rule not the exception on these hunts, understand the "rules" of steep shooting angles. A successful tur hunt may be the pinnacle of mountain hunting.
